2010 Pumpkin Patch Care Information

Instructions for Pumpkin Patch gardeners:

1. Water on Tu, Th, and pick either Sat/Sun.  Three days. At a convenient time of day ----UNLESS we received an inch or more of rain the day before or the day of the watering, in which case you can skip--sprinkles or a promise of rain doesn’t count. Pumpkins need a lot of water.  If in doubt, contact Julie.

2.  Go to the water spigot located on the east side of the Church and north of the downstairs doors which is the entrance to the children’s area.  Turn on spigot. At the “Y” joint flip the lever to an on position. (Water flow is regulated through the joint piece.)

Water spigot on the east side of the Church

Water valve and 4-way manifold at the south end of the Pumpkin Patch. Twist valves are open when parallel to the hose and off when perpendicular.

3.  Go up to the patch.  Check to see that water flow is getting to each patch.  You might have to lift some corners of the white cover and feel the hoses.  Soakers hoses don’t spray, they weep moisture.

4.  Check plant covers. Correct any anchor points that have come loose on the white float cloth.

5. Then enjoy a wonderful quiet time for an hour sitting under a tree or by the rock cairn--or if you have children, bring them and play a game on the lower lawn area, or read a book, or listen to music, or take a nap.  The hour goes faster than you’d think! This is three hours of your time for the project. Okay, well there is travel time. J

Pumpkin Patch Gardener responsibilities:

1. Water on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday ----UNLESS we receive an inch or more of rain the day before or the day of the watering, in which case you can skip--sprinkles or a promise of rain doesn’t count. We are five inches below normal so don't be afraid you will over water.  At any convenient time of day attach the garden hose to patch #one soaker hose, run for half an hour, then switch the hose to soaker hose #two, run for half an hour. You will have to push the small yellow lever at the start of the hose connection which is just below the spigot. This will open the side that funnels water to the patch.  BTW, only turn the spigot a 1/4 notch or back it off to this degree if it is turned on fuller-do not touch the adjoining hose with the timer. I guess this goes to other areas of the landscape that buildings and grounds oversees.

2. Check area around the plots.  Fix anything that has blown off course. The white float cloth is rolled up right now along one side of each plot.

3. If you see an identified weed, feel free to pull it.

4.  Report if you think the plants don't look healthy--lots of holes chewed in the leaves, leaves that are yellow, shriveled, or dusty white.

5. Then enjoy a wonderful quiet time for an hour sitting under a tree or by the rock cairn--or if you have children, bring them and play a game on the lower lawn area, or read a book, or listen to music, or take a nap.  The hour goes faster than you’d think! This is FOUR hours of your time for the project--okay, well there is travel time :)

6. When you are finished watering, coil the hose on the inside edge of the walk way near the rain barrel.  We must help the volunteer mower by keeping the area clear of obstructions.

7. Call Julie Carda at 334-2666, with any garden observations you think should be passed to the CE group.
