Second Unitarian Church of Omaha

Library Lending Policy

Date of Policy: 4/17/2002

Policy Updated: 2/16/2006

Policy Owner: Library Committee

Our library is named in memory of long-time member and avid reader, Macyl Boruff.  The library houses materials that provide insight into Unitarian and Universalism as well as research materials for committees.  Materials range from books to audio tapes to DVDs.

Members and friends are encouraged to browse the shelves and check out items of interest.  We request that items be returned within 2 weeks so that they remain accessible to everyone.

Guidelines for Choosing/Keeping/Weeding Books

Library materials as a whole should provide an overall sprinkling of diversity.  Due to shelf space limitations preference will be given to:

·        Materials that support the church's mission

·        Classics in religious thought

·        Materials not readily available in a public library

·        Out of print or irreplaceable books

·        Books in good condition

·        Religious or spiritual materials that aid individual searches for meaning

·        Unitarian Universalism content

·        Spiritual/humanist non-fiction

The Library Committee will monitor frequency of usage with the goal of providing multiple copies of popular items.

Donated materials that do fall within these guidelines and materials that are removed from the shelves will be sold at non-profit book sales or donated to organizations such as the Friends of the Omaha Public Library or the Goodwill.
